Triumph Counseling Group Founder and Therapist

Our founder and lead counselor, Khary Blackmon, MS, LPC, is the creator behind Triumph Counseling Group.

He started his career as a teacher in Philadelphia public schools after graduating from Lincoln University of PA. It was during his teaching career that he first recognized that young people, mostly black and brown, weren’t reaching their fullest potential despite being talented, intelligent, and resilient. He developed a passion for wanting to see better outcomes for the children and families he worked with.

This passion would inspire him to return to school in order to pursue a master’s degree in counseling psychology with a school focus. After graduating with his Masters degree in counseling psychology from Holy Family University, he was offered a position with one of the top psychiatric hospitals in Philadelphia, as Lead Clinician in it’s crisis center. He spent 2 years working there learning first hand about acute psychiatric disorders, substance abuse, long term effects of trauma, and the treatments that effectively treated all of them.

Khary went on to work as a therapist in inpatient and outpatient settings. He worked primarily with pre-adolescent and adolescent boys treating trauma, depression, social deficiencies, and poor self-esteem. In this work, he recognized that even children with the most severe traumas were responsive to people who genuinely cared about them and that effectiveness was accelerated when the provider was able to identify with them on a cultural level.

Khary would return to the school system as a school counselor to finish what he started. Khary worked day-in and day-out to provide his students with the resources necessary to succeed. In his work he found that many students needed to be referred to mental health professionals but students and their families alike were typically untrusting and/or unsatisfied with the available resources.

Khary had the idea to start a practice to fill the void that he was witnessing first hand. There needed to be a place to provide children and their families with culturally relevant resources necessary to address the unique needs of the community it served, thus Triumph Counseling Group was created.

Khary is a married to a beautiful wife and has two beautiful children of his own. He continues to work as a school counselor full time, is a walking deacon at his church and a assistant track coach. In his spare time he enjoys spending time with family, eating out, and listening to music.
